2015-4-6 2021-3-28 · We present a rare case of pathological shaft of femur fracture in an 18-year-old male, with an underlying arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Magnetic resonance imaging showed extensive intraosseous femoral involvement of the vascular malformation, and the canal was deemed to be wide enough for a nail based on the radiograph templates and computed tomography (CT) scan. Nail features Wall thickness increases torsional stiffness Open slot decreases rigidity Nail diameter – bending stiffness Material – titanium 1.6x stronger than steel Cross sectional shape Use of interlocking screws resists axial loading Radius of curvature of nail (120cm vs 150-300cm) Proximal femur nail with locking and stabilisation screws for treatment of femur fractures of left thigh. An intramedullary rod, also known as an intramedullary nail (IM nail) or inter-locking nail or Küntscher nail (without proximal or distal fixation), is a metal rod forced into the medullary cavity of a bone. The intramedullary nail is inserted over the guide wire into the distal fragment, to abut the femoral prosthesis. The nail is then interlocked proximally and distally utilizing standard techniques. For more details regarding retrograde femoral nailing, depending on the fracture pattern, please refer to the dedicated section of the distal femur in the AO Surgery Reference .

Screws are placed above and below the fracture to hold the leg in correct alignment while the bone heals. (Left) This x-ray, taken from the side, shows a transverse fracture of the femur. The most common surgery for a broken femur is called intramedullary nailing.

Occasionally, additional small Intramedullary nailing of the proximal femur has become the standard method of treatment for most subtrochanteric femur fractures. Contemporary femoral nails are categorized by their screw orientation and nail design. Standard antegrade femoral nails have a radius of curvature or anterior bow to facilitate its insertion into the femoral canal.

RIGID INTRAMEDULLARY NAILING This surgery is also performed by the Orthopedic Surgeon in the Operating Room under general anesthesia. The surgeon will make an incision near the hip joint in order to insert a rigid rod (intramedullary nail) through the femur. The rod is fixed by screws at both ends and will keep the bone

However, its occurrence can be minimized by a well-positioned implant, with a short Tip-to-Apex Distance (TAD). intramedullary nail A metal rod forced into the medullary cavity of long, weight-bearing bones (e.g., femur, tibia), which allows ambulation within weeks rather than months. Intramedullary nails have a cloverleaf appearance on cross-section and are made of titanium, which has a lower rate of mechanical failure and improved biocompatibility. INTRODUCTION: The insertion of 2 elastic stable intramedullary nails (ESINs) is a common treatment for pediatric femur fractures. However, the use of this technique in length-unstable or metadiaphyseal fractures has historically been associated with higher complication rates.

The lag screw is secured in the nail member by a set screw inserted into an outer end of the nail member. 2021-2-8 · The intramedullary magnetic IM nail enables bone graduated distraction. Proximal femur osteotomies for ante grade IM lengthening nails have a tendency towards varus-procurvatum malalignment. We examined the effect of the level of the osteotomy and of trochanteric versus piriformis entry points on the neck shaft angle (NSA) during lengthening with the PRECICE IM magnetic nail. 2021-3-3 · Second, the insertion site of the intramedullary nail was identified.

These devices are inserted inside the marrow cavity of a long bone (tibia, femur, humerus, or forearm bones).
