The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s Music Director, Manfred Honeck, will lead the London Symphony in its October 4, 2012 concert featuring Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 (“Jupiter”) and Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn. In this recording from 2011, they perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17 in G major together for the first time in Berlin. The same evening, Claudio Abbado conducted the Adagio from Mahler’s unfinished Tenth Symphony with his old orchestra for the first time. At the latter position, he was again standing in Gustav Mahler's footprints when he led the official Mahler production of Mozart's Così fan tutte.

The concert, presented in David Geffen Hall and the last of the Manfred Honeck has served as Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since the 2008-2009 season.

“He loved the piano concerto,” Honeck said. “The piano concertos are a cornerstone of his oeuvre.” The program’s earliest work is Exsultate, jubilate (Exalt, Rejoice), K. 165, a solo motet that Mozart — then still a teenager — composed in 1773 while staying in Milan during the production of his opera Lucio Silla.

In 2018, he was named Artist of the Year by the International Classical Music Awards. On January 28, 2018, Honeck and the PSO were awarded the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance for their recording of Shostakovich Honeck sets off at a fair old lick; the first movement strikes me as being a little too rushed, but Honeck provides a forensic analysis of Mahler's orchestration.

I believe that if the reviewer could have suspended his “ology” and simply listened to the “music”, especially the juxtaposition of the Requiem’s non-ending with perhaps the slowest and softest “Ave Verum Corpus Manfred Honeck conducts Mozart’s Requiem with the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh. Manfred Honeck was born in the Nenzing, Austria, near the Austrian border with Switzerland and Liechtenstein, one of nine children of Otto and Frieda Honeck. One of his brothers is the Vienna Philharmonic concertmaster Rainer Honeck. Honeck lives in the village of Altach, Vorarlberg, Austria with his wife Christiane and their six children.
